Can HireVue, Mettl or Codility Detect Cheating? Proctoring Compared
Three of the most common hiring assessment platforms in India, compared by what they can actually observe: HireVue's recorded video interviews, Mercer Mettl's proctored and secure-browser tests, and Codility's code-similarity checks.
If you're applying through Indian campus drives or service-company hiring, you'll meet these names often. They look similar from the outside, a link and a timer, but they check different things. This is a plain-language comparison of the signals each is built around. Exact features vary by plan and by how the hiring company configures the test, so treat your invitation email as authoritative.
HireVue: it watches you, not your desktop
HireVue is best known for recorded video interviews: questions appear, you record your answer within a time limit. The evaluated material is the recording: your answer content, communication and presentation, reviewed by people and, depending on the employer, assisted by software.
What that means in practice:
- The signal is you on camera. Reading from a screen with obvious eye movement, long pauses or scripted-sounding answers are the visible risks.
- Because the answer is a recording, there's no live back-and-forth to catch inconsistency. The check is the later interview, where you'll be asked to expand on what you said.
- Coding or game-based components, if present, work like other browser assessments.
Mercer Mettl: the most proctoring options
Mettl is widely used for large-scale screening and offers the broadest set of integrity features, which companies enable selectively:
- Webcam proctoring with snapshots or recording, often with face-presence checks
- Secure or locked-down browser modes that restrict switching and other applications
- Tab-switch and full-screen enforcement
- Human or automated review of flagged sessions afterwards
If a Mettl test says it requires a secure browser or an installed proctoring app, that's a materially different environment from a plain browser test. Follow its rules. Software that runs outside a normal browser tab is not the same as software that a lockdown client is built to inspect.
Codility: the code is the evidence
Codility assessments are mostly about the code you submit. Typical integrity levers include:
- Similarity checks between your solution and others'
- Replay of how the solution was written, so bursts of pasted code stand out
- Test-case behavior, such as odd patterns across tasks
Codility cares less about what's on your desktop than about whether the solution looks like your own working-out.
Side by side
| HireVue | Mercer Mettl | Codility | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main medium | Recorded video answers | Proctored online tests | Coding tasks |
| Watches your face | Yes (it's the product) | Optional | Rarely |
| Locks down the browser | No | Often available | Usually no |
| Strongest signal | Content and delivery | Layered proctoring | Code similarity and replay |
| Key risk | Sounding scripted | Violating test rules | Code that isn't yours |
What to do instead of guessing
- Read the candidate instructions twice and note anything about webcams, secure browsers or installed software.
- Don't install or run anything the instructions prohibit.
- Practise the format. For video, record yourself with a timer. For coding, solve problems in a plain editor.
- Prepare to explain every answer in a later round. That is where most assessments are really decided.
How to read your invitation email
The single most useful document is the one the company sent you. Look for these phrases:
| If it says | It likely means |
|---|---|
| "Webcam required" or "proctored" | Webcam snapshots or recording, possibly reviewed by a human |
| "Secure browser" or "install the proctoring app" | A locked-down client that restricts other apps and screens |
| "Full-screen mode required" | Exiting full screen is logged or pauses the test |
| "Single monitor only" | Extra displays may be flagged |
| "Recorded video responses" | A HireVue-style asynchronous interview |
| "Time-limited coding tasks" | Codility-style assessment with code review |
If the email is silent, ask the recruiter. Asking is normal and shows you care about doing it correctly.
Preparing for each format
Recorded video answers (HireVue-style)
- Practise with a timer and your phone camera.
- Use the first seconds to structure: point, example, result.
- Look into the camera, not at a second window.
- Prepare six stories you can adapt. See the STAR method.
Proctored multiple-choice and aptitude tests (Mettl-style)
- Do the system check early and on the same machine you'll use.
- Charge the laptop, close everything else and silence notifications.
- Know what is allowed: calculator, paper, rough sheet.
- Keep your ID ready and your room tidy.
Coding tasks (Codility-style)
- Write code you can explain. Similarity checks and replays reward original working-out.
- Handle edge cases and keep complexity in mind, since hidden tests check both.
- Submit incrementally rather than in one final burst.
Common honest-candidate mistakes
- Switching to a calculator app and triggering a focus flag
- Using a second monitor that the rules forbid
- Reading the question aloud in a way that sounds like reading an answer
- Having a person or a noisy TV in the room
- Not testing the webcam after a Windows update
What happens if you are flagged?
Usually the flag goes to a human reviewer or to the hiring team with the evidence (screenshots, logs, video). If something innocent triggered it, tell the recruiter promptly and factually. Delays and silence look worse than a short explanation.
Sources and freshness
This post summarizes publicly described capabilities of each platform and how browser-based tests work. Vendors change features and each company configures its own tests. We last reviewed it in October 2026, and your invitation email overrides anything here. For the general concept see what is interview proctoring.

CoderPad is a shared, browser-based editor where your interviewer watches you type. What it actually records (code playback, paste events, focus changes), what it can't see outside the tab, and why the live human is the real check.
